Frosted Panes

Things are off and rolling with home improvements. Furniture shopping has been challenging thus far so I have been excited to make some easy and affordable changes. I have seen simple contact paper used to frost windows and doors to add subtle privacy. The master bathroom is sandwiched between the master bedroom and the sunroom. This different layout paired with glass paned doors, while gorgeous, create a privacy issue. When we moved in, the doors and window in the bathroom featured sheer, floral embossed curtains hung with tension and mounted curtain rods.

The treatments were not horrible, but once I had the idea and vision of frosting the glass I knew it would look so much better! I purchased three rolls of basic contact paper. I measured each pane and cut the contact paper to size. I researched the best way to apply the paper and decided on this method. Clean and dry the glass, spray a coat of window cleaner evenly, peel off contact paper backing, and apply to glass. The cleaner allows more control of paper placement. Position paper and then use a pot scraper to ease out the bubbles.

This method did not work on the first attempt...or the second. It was time consuming, frustrating, and while trying to remove bubbles, my scraper was causing streaks in the paper. It looked horrible!

I took a break and expanded my research to look for application instructions from more professional window film products. I found this review on Amazon that offered a different method using dish soap and a shower glass squeegee. The process was very similar, only dish soap and water was used rather than window cleaner. It worked perfectly and the application of all 32 glass panes was not as intimidating. Because the window film is in a bathroom, I applied the paper to the outside of the glass doors to avoid any possible problems due to shower steam. The window film was applied inside, but so far steam has not altered the application or appearance.

The project was time consuming and tedious, but well worth the work! I love the subtle privacy it offers. Removing the curtains makes the bathroom look more open and airy and I also really enjoy seeing the architecture of the doors and windows. I hope this inspires you to make a small and affordable change to your space!

Fresh Mantel Decor

This year, I am one of those people who didn't quite get the Christmas decorations back into the closet until long after the holiday...just yesterday to be exact. Even though there is snow on the ground and it is bitter cold, I am starting to feel spring creeping in and the lovely idea of new beginnings.

I absolutely loved our Christmas mantel decor this past season in the new home. Once put away, the ledge was quite bare. After being snowed and iced indoors the past few days, we all ventured out to lunch and Home Goods. My last trip there was a let down, but this visit proved very successful! I gathered some great items to put together a classic and yet somewhat springy {to me} mantel display.

The white petal vase is something I would not normally choose. However, I have been seeing a lot of white ceramic floating around and love the contrast it brings! I am also getting excited for some refreshing projects that are on my list!

Curtain for Curtain

I finally found time {and a babysitter...thanks Kel} to take a trip to Ikea. It is over two hours away so I had to be sure of my wish list and measurements! I made out with a lot of great items for the new home...mostly storage for my craft space!

In addition to furniture, I found some fun things to make the kids' bathroom more FUN! They used to share a bathroom with our guests and so it was always very 'adult' decor. I found towels for $5 each and a fun, soft bath rug. I also loved the Barnslig Randig window curtains in the Ikea showroom. I was drawn to the primary colors and gender neutrality since Mr and Miss share the space.

Once home, I got to work transforming the window panels into a festive shower curtain. I sewed the two panels together {thank goodness the design pattern matched up!} and then made 12 evenly spaced buttonholes at the top hem of the curtain. I finished out the buttonholes by cutting slits and adding anti-fray solution for durability.

It was so easy and looks amazing! I love the colors and the simple, yet fun design. Mr E and Miss C are excited to enjoy it as well! I am hoping to have more new home reveals coming up soon!

I'm Back...with a 'major award'

So, I took an unannounced and unexpected break from blogging. Most bloggers get burnt out at some point and the overwhelm hit me...along with the new move, home repairs, and life. We had a lovely Christmas that was jam packed with celebrations and fun with family!

One of those weeks...

It's normal for anyone to have a rough day, but we are definitely having a rough week. We moved last Monday and already are dealing with structural problems...mainly water. Water leak in the exterior soffit and a major leak in the ceiling near the fireplace. And to top it all off, I stepped in a pool of water this morning leaking from the dishwasher. This too shall pass and hopefully without too much heartache (and moolah). Thanks for letting me vent! Hope you are all having a better week!

Welcome Home

We are finally moved in and getting settled in our new home! The kids love it. The first few days they would magically disappear. I would frantically look for them expecting a horrible mess or worse...and find them playing nicely...and quietly! Amazing! I know the honeymoon phase will wear off, but we are so happy here and it feels just like home.

This morning, I carried Miss C downstairs at 6 am. We were both sleepy eyed, but as the sun came up I was humbled by the gorgeous view outside. The grass was frosted and our sage painted family room blended seamlessly with the blue-green landscape and crystal pond. So blessed to be here and with the people I love. Hope you are all enjoying the holiday season so far!

It Has Begun...

The moving process....the down and dirty....the heavy lifting...the repeated trips to the trunk for more. We start moving in today! Professional movers are scheduled for Monday, but today is the day we will start to fill our new home. I am thrilled and humbled by our blessings.

Just a little note from long lost me. We closed on our new home last Tuesday and get possession TOMORROW! I am so excited!

We are also hosting Thanksgiving for hubby's family, so I will be busy cooking and cleaning for the 20 guests. It's always humbling to see family gather and give thanks.

Minnie Mouse

Miss C was Minnie Mouse for Halloween this year! I have fond memories of the handmade red and white polka dot felt costume my Mom made for me when I was little. Painted face, black tights, and big ears finished with a red bow.

Carrying on the tradition of handmade Halloween, I was excited to whip up a cute original for Miss C. Unfortunately Minnie patterns do not resemble the original red and white dot dress I knew growing up. Most are hot pink and with that modern flair. I decided to use another basic dress pattern that resembled the Minnie dress that featured puff sleeves, scoop neck, and full skirt. I chose McCall's Pattern M5793 and it was perfect!

I altered the pattern a bit since this was only for a Halloween costume. The dress was made using Dress D (pictured in pink). I did line the bodice, but skipped making a skirt lining and petticoat, and omitted the bottom hem ruffle. The skirt still had plenty of fullness and oomph! The neck and sleeve hem was finished using white double fold bias tape. I also added a white satin ribbon sash with bow to complete her look. Overall the pattern was super easy to follow and to construct.

A little black nose, eyelashes, and red bow ears made Miss C one of the cutest Minnie Mouse girls!

Thursday Threads: Moving Tales

Finding a house to move into and transform it into your own home is so exciting!! And then...you wrap your brain around the reality of moving. The packing, the stuff, the cleaning, the stuff, de-cluttering, and oh,...more stuff. Hubby is a bit of a minimalist and I am counting down until we tackle the basement together.

While the task of packing and cleaning are quite daunting in my head, it has not been as bad as I envisioned {so far}. Today, I want to share a few tips and tricks that I have learned over the past few weeks. This advice comes from my own 'Thank goodness I learned that early' experience. I am no expert, but hopefully this will help a few people and can help spruce up your home even if you are not planning a move.

So, on to business!

{TIP 1}
Gather materials! I initially thought I could pack up our life in the boxes we had laying around the house. I am always keeping boxes, but it will definitely not be enough. Instead of running to a retail store for boxes and packing paper, I searched Craigslist. Within a day, I had 100 boxes for only $40! Many people were giving them away for free. Use them and pass it on!

{TIP 2}
Thank goodness for family! And for smart sisters! One of my younger sisters visited today with Mom to help clean, take photos, and babysit. I was staring at scuffed and fingerprinted walls and she suggests a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. 'I think I have one stashed under the sink!' Sure enough, I did and it is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!! Scuffs, marks, food, fingerprints, dirt, and more easily wiped off the walls, doors, and trim. I couldn't put it down! Just make sure you have enough on hand. They can wear down quickly and it's addicting!

{TIP 3}
Speaking of family, lean on your support system! Call a friend, neighbor, or family to help you clean or pack. Or have someone take the kiddos for a few hours while you bury yourself hip deep in packing paper and tape!

{TIP 4}
One day at a time! Make a list of the projects that need completed. Be specific. Tackle one room each day. Or pack 2-4 boxes each day. Be concise in your labeling and before you know it...life is packed and ready to move!

October is flying by! We visited the pumpkin patch yesterday and had a great time hunting for the perfect pumpkin and then carving. Mr E was convinced it was finally Halloween as we enjoyed watching our spooky pumpkins light up the porch! Trying to explain days versus weeks to a toddler is rough...especially when they are doing their best to master patience itself.

In trying to explain how many weeks until Halloween arrives, my Mom suggested a spooky countdown calendar. I did not find a cute printable with a quick Google search, so I fashioned my own for Mr E.

We Are Moving!

Yes, you read that correctly...we are in the process of moving to another home! Hubby has made it his hobby for the past 6 years to 'browse' the housing market. We always said 'When the right one comes along, we'll be ready.' Most of the time I got my hopes up and came crashing down after the walk through. Low and behold, we recently stumbled upon a house that will be our dream home {after some minor tweaking}. I am SO excited to start this new journey! We can finally complete the renovations and makeovers without regret. This will be the home where my little ones grow up. This is the home that Hubby and I chose together.

Along with the excitement {as many of you know}, comes the overwhelm of 'now what?' What did I get myself into?? We have jumped into planning and packing...and purging!!

This beautiful stack is a piece of me and of my history. This is nearly every paper from my nursing education. I read every word in that pile and {once upon a time} knew it all! It impresses me and makes me proud. It is bittersweet, but empowering to let it all go. I am saying goodbye to the hard proof of the knowledge I gained while in nursing school. And it's okay because I have an amazing career caring for Organ Transplant patients. That is the real proof and I can finally start letting go of the printed past. This is 30 pounds less stuff I have to move! Off to the recycling center!

As anyone can see from my Party page, I love to link up projects and posts throughout the week. Not only do link parties increase blog traffic, but it is fun to see what is going on in Blogland! Yesterday I discovered a fun blog, Ask Anna.

Within the first few minutes of browsing her blog, I learned three new {easy} tricks to clean my home and make life easier! How to clean a fiberglass shower stall = easy! I literally closed my computer and ran upstairs to clean. How often does that happen?!

HOW TO CLEAN FIBERGLASS SHOWER STALL

I am amazed because tips and tricks like these usually come at a high price or use some gimmicky product. Anna shares attainable and affordable ways to clean and tidy your home. Most projects use household items including baking soda, white vinegar, and hairspray! You will be amazed at what lemons can do!

Miss C thought it would be fun to draw on my shirt with a pen last week. I have a stain remover for that, but it didn't work. I stumbled upon this fabulous trick to remove ink stains. It uses only ONE simple household item. Stain is gone! Thank you!

The cleaning tips and tricks list is awesome, but Anna has many other fortes! She also shares organizing tips, tutorial wish lists, and her favorite cleaning products for each room of the house. And...she is SO friendly and has the cutest family!

What If?

Asking 'What if?' usually means regret. It infers wishful thinking. The question dwells on uncertainty. I have found my mind wandering to this question a lot lately.

What if I continued on my path of a Biology degree?
What if I had stayed in a relationship with 'so and so'?
What if Miss C doesn't sleep through the night tonight?
What if I don't eat better and focus on me?

Most of the time, deep within I already know the answer. Asking 'What if?' stirs up self doubt, however, I have been comforted. I am more than grateful I chose the relationship path I did. My hubby is my rock and I cannot imagine life without him in it. If anything, reflecting on the past stirs fear...I see what could have happened. And 'What if?' turns into 'Thank goodness!'

Thank goodness for my amazing nursing degree and ability to stay home with the little ones!
Thank goodness I have been blessed with my hubby!
Thank goodness Miss C is cozy in her bed and sleeping soundly!
Thank goodness I am healthy and have plentiful food!

My mind wanders, but I have control to take a negative reflection and spin it using a different perspective. As hubby reminds me, 'Everything is relative.' We have to take everything with a grain of salt and look at the amazing blessings in our life...my children, my husband, my family, my job, food and shelter, and LOVE.

Thursday Threads: Tank Dress Tutorial

I have recently oooo'd and ahhh'd at the lovely clothing by Matilda Jane. A modern, but also girly and frilly touch. Too bad the MJ dresses cost a mint! I could not justify spending the moolah for a dress Miss C will quickly grow out of. Keeping with the famous words of my Mother, I made it for less!

Wanna learn how? Of course you do!

You will need a few materials:

Ready to wear cotton tank or shirt
1/4 yard of fabric for the skirt, cut 2 pieces each 9.25" x 22"
45 inches of ribbon or finished trim for skirt hem
45 inches of fusible lightweight interfacing, 1/2" wide strip
Rotary cutter or scissors
Matching thread

Quick note: This tutorial is for a 18-24 month dress. Adjust measurements accordingly to fit your desired size.

Start by pre-washing all of your fabrics, including the purchased cotton tank or shirt. This will pre-shrink all materials to prevent your finished product from becoming wonky after its first laundering.

Now it's time to get crazy and cut your tank! I cut across the top 3 inches below the underarm seam. Be sure to allow for seam allowance.

I applied a 1/2 inch strip of interfacing to the raw edge of the chopped top to add more structure to the bodice/skirt seam. I used DecorBond {from my stash}, but a lighter weight interfacing can be used.

APPLY INTERFACING TO THE WRONG SIDE

Next prep your skirt! Place both pieces right sides together and stitch each side seam using a 1/4" seam allowance. Finish your raw edge with zigzag or interlock {serger} stitch.

Time to add some volume! Baste the top edge of your skirt leaving long thread tails for gathering. I tested my sewing machine's ruffler foot and was amazed at the awesome gathering that resulted in less than 2 minutes! Once you baste, pull up your bobbin threads to create gathers.

Fit the skirt {right sides together} to the interfaced edge of your cotton tank. Be sure to line up your side seams!

Pin and stitch 1/2" seam allowance. The more pins, the better! Over pinning will help ease the gathered skirt. Slow and steady to make a lovely gathered skirt seam.

Once the skirt is sewn to your cotton tank, turn right side out and top stitch. My seam wanted to roll a bit due to the stiffer interfacing. The top stitching will add stability and will prevent raveling. You can also add zigzag or interlock stitch to the seam allowance.

You're almost finished!! Lay out your dress on a flat cutting surface {make sure it's even}. Now with your scissors or rotary cutter, even up the skirt hem.

Position your trim or ribbon {right sides together} along the skirt bottom raw edge. Pin and stitch 1/4" seam allowance. Top stitch in place.

Ta da!! You did it! So easy, so cute, and best of all...so affordable!

Spooky Cake

I have been itching to try the Thin Mint Cake found over at Joyful Baker! I love all things chocolate and mint always adds a delicious twist. I made the cake as directed, but used Crisco baking sticks and added a teaspoon of vanilla for a bit more flavor.

While the cake was cooling, I brainstormed about which frosting to use. A buttercream seemed to rich for the mint flavor {and I was out of butter}. I remembered the fluffy, creamy, lemon topping used in Lemon Raspberry Tiramisu...perfect! I halved the lemon cream filling recipe and used less lemon flavoring. I was nervous it would be too runny to ice the cake, but it was juuusst right!

And in the spirit of the season, I decided to add some spooky Halloween drizzle.

For the chocolate, I melted 1/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips with 1/2 Tablespoon of margarine. I watered it down until it was the right consistency for drizzling. I then used a fork to 'fling' the chocolate over top of the cake.

I had a little lemon cream leftover and added food coloring {yellow and a bit of red} to make it orange. I then heated it {in the microwave} for 15 seconds...it was just right for drizzling and the color became a more vivid orange!

Mr. E and I searched for our creepy plastic spider to make it extra spooky. Nowhere to be seen...eek!

The cake is a lovely texture and has a certain spice that compliments the season!! Enjoy!

Glitter Gone Wrong

I had a vision, this fabulous idea. And...it didn't go quite as planned. Most of blogland is {conveyed as} unicorns, rainbows, and the perfect white picket place. Not so. After several hours of mental planning and problem solving I attempted to make a lovely, glitzy holiday sign for our mantel.

I started with a leftover Ikea tabletop piece. It's been in the garage for three years and I finally found a spark to upcycle.

BEFORE

I started by cleaning, lightly sanding, and spraying with Valspar Satin Spray Paint in Churchill Hotel Vanilla. I applied three coats and let it dry completely overnight. The finish was fairly bubbly and rough after drying. I sanded out all imperfections in the texture and applied one last coat. It was beautiful!!

I was excited to use a stencil to apply a fancy phrase in silver glitter. Subtle contrast, but with some glitz to add a classic holiday sparkle. I don't own a Silhouette or other equipment {although after this project, I am convinced I need one}. My bright idea was to design, print, and cut out the graphic to create my stencil. It took a lot of time, but the stencil turned out great!

Time to paint with glitter! I have heard rave reviews of the new Krylon Glitter Blast spray paint and was excited to try it. Unfortunately, Hobby Lobby did not have the 'Blast' version so I bought the other glitter spray paint from Krylon. I applied my stencil using a light adhesive spray and masked the remainder of my sign.

I applied three light coats of the glitter paint. Contrary to what I had read, the glitter spray did not do so well. It is more liquid than normal spray paint and soaked through my cardstock stencil. The residue ate away at my gorgeous sign finish leaving an ugly looking residue. Grrr!

AFTER ONE COAT

So, I am on to plan B...sadly. I am hoping to use a vinyl transfer in order to achieve my original vision. So off to go sand and refinish.

As you can see, projects don't always go as planned...just like life. But in the end there is always a solution or a way out. Hopefully I will be able to share a lovely, sparkly new sign soon!!

Reflection

Last week flew by and all of a sudden it was Sunday again. We spent the weekend with family...just taking advantage of time together.

9/11 arrived so unexpectedly. I cannot pretend to know what it is like to make such an enormous sacrifice...the sacrifice that so many men and women made to save us and to preserve our freedom. So selfless and brave. I caught a few glimpses of the many television tributes, but found myself numb again. No words and I didn't really want to relive the feeling. There are so many that relive that feeling every.single.day. All we can say is thank you. God is good. All the time.

Short and Sweet

I can't believe it is Thursday already this week! Temperatures were 97 degrees last Saturday at Mr. E's birthday party and I woke at 5:30am today to a chilly 55 degrees! It's blustery and rainy...yuck! I'm not sure where the week went, but now I am knee deep in sick kiddos, snot, and poop. For once, housework was a better distraction and I managed to do ALL {5 loads} of laundry yesterday.

Here's to better {fall} weather, happy children, and a clean house. Hope you all had better weeks!!

Tuesday Threads: Mr E's Third Birthday!

Yes, you read that correctly...it's Tuesday. I am featuring this week's Thursday Threads post early. Mainly because I am too excited to wait until Thursday!

We were so excited to celebrate Mr E's third birthday last weekend! I absolutely love planning the kids' parties and Mr. E was thrilled to have a TRAIN party! Once he chose the theme, I summoned the creative juices and gathered inspiration. It was such a joy to celebrate with close friends and family. Everyone had a blast!

I got the idea to feature a REAL train ride since the Indiana Transportation Museum is nearby. The party was held at a park and everyone climbed aboard for a special caboose train ride! I chose a basic color theme and decorations that were easy to set up before the party.

This was the first year, Mr. E was excited to invite all of his friends. I was thrilled to be able to plan some fun activities for the kids to enjoy. Coloring pages from Cake Ink and fun paintable wooden trains!

Then there is the food! A must for an outdoor party! I decided to put together a variety of box lunches. Hosting a party outside the home makes it difficult to prep in advance. The less you haul, the better!

I {foolishly} worked at the hospital the day before E's party, which meant I woke up at 5:30am Friday, took care of kiddos, left for work at 2pm, and made it back in my bed at 1:30am Saturday morning. I was exhausted! So, I tried to plan ahead and do as much prep work as possible. I made 30 deli sandwiches Friday morning and prepped single serving cups of grapes and baby cucumber slices on Thursday. The sandwiches were added to each box lunch right before the party so they remained cool on our 97 degree day!

Each box lunch held a sandwich, chips or crackers, grapes, and cucumber slices. The bakers boxes were personalized with an 'All Aboard!' sticker and a 'Choo choo' joke on the inner lid. To stay cool, the guests enjoyed blueberry lemonade and cold water! The table decor included a vintage suitcase, oil lantern, and 'Fuel Up' sign.

Mr. E wrapped up the Happy Birthday chorus by blowing out the candles on his fun train cake!

After lunch, crafts, cake, and a few gifts, favors were handed out before our train ride. Each child received a train cap personalized with their name, a wooden train whistle, train sticker, and some Chugga-Chews crackers. The adults grabbed a chocolate chip cookie on the way to the station. It was great to see the kids enjoying their hats and hearing them toot on the whistles!

We rushed to the nearby train station just in time! Two red cabooses were lined up and ready to take us on a special birthday ride! We also enjoyed touring the museum's mail train car and dining car. The ride was hot {and a little lengthy for the kids}, but we experienced a very authentic trip through woods and over the creek. So fun!

It was an amazing day that was fun to plan, but MOST importantly we had fun celebrating Mr. E! He is my little man who is so full of energy and wit.

Thursday Threads: Fall Pinspiration

Life is busy, busy this week. Mr. E starts his first day {second year} of 'school' today. I am also planning his third birthday party for this Saturday. It's crunch time! The temperatures outside are finally bearable and even enjoyable. The mornings have that cool, damp feel and the breeze leaves a certain clean smell of a new season in the air.

Some people LOVE fall and are giddy with excitement with first signs of colored leaves and different shades of apples. One such person is my dear sister-in-law {you may know her as Sparkly Sandy}. Sandy introduced me to my wonderful hubby. Our meeting was by sheer 'accident'...a story for another day. Unfortunately, Sandy has recently suffered a very severe bilateral ankle injury. Things could have been worse, but she has a long road to recovery. She is one of my dearest friends and I know God will keep her going through thick and thin! Please send your thoughts and prayers. I love ya sis!

We are gearing up to enjoy the cooler weather and fun that fall brings. Hope this inspires you as well for the coming season!

Lemon Raspberry Tiramisu

I discovered this amazing dessert while pregnant with Mr. E. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and had to follow a strict carbohydrate controlled diet. I am addicted to sweets, so I spent the last three months of my pregnancy searching for yummy {healthier} treats. This dessert has less sugar by using a Splenda substitute and still tastes wonderful! {I could shovel in just the lemon cream filling...by the spoonful in a quiet corner.} Three years later, Lemon Raspberry Tiramisu is highly requested for family gatherings.

This recipe is adapted from TLC Cooking, which uses an 11x7 inch pan. My recipe below uses a 9x13 inch pan. Be sure to visit the recipe link for nutritional information.

Let's get started!

INGREDIENTS:
3 packages (3 oz each) ladyfingers {found in the bakery/bread aisle}
1 pint fresh raspberries OR frozen, unsweetened raspberries

Lemon Cream Layer:
2 packages {8oz each} fat-free cream cheese, softened
1/4 + 1 Tbsp Splenda for baking
1 tsp vanilla
1/3 cup water
1 package {4-serving size} sugar-free lemon flavored gelatin
4 cups thawed cool whip {fat free or light}

Fruit Layer:
1 - 12 oz jar sugar free strawberry OR red raspberry preserves
1/3 cup water
2 Tbsp Marsala wine

DIRECTIONS:
1. Start by making the lemon cream filling. Combine cream cheese, sugar substitute and vanilla in large mixing bowl. Beat with electric mixer at high speed until smooth; set aside.

2. Combine water and gelatin in small microwavable bowl. Microwave on HIGH for 30- 60 seconds or until water is boiling and gelatin is dissolved. Cool slightly.

3. Add gelatin mixture to cream cheese mixture; beat 1 minute. Add whipped topping; beat 1 minute more, scraping sides of bowl. Set aside.

4. Whisk together preserves, water and marsala in small bowl until well blended. Spread 1/2 to 1 cup preserves mixture evenly over bottom of 9 x 13-inch baking dish.

5. Arrange one layer of ladyfingers {using 1.5 packages} over the fruit mixture base.

6. Spread half of lemon cream mixture evenly over ladyfingers.

7. Sprinkle raspberries evenly over cheese mixture.

8. Top with remaining ladyfingers.

9. Spread remaining preserves mixture over ladyfingers.

10. Top with remaining lemon cream mixture. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours. Garnish as desired.

ENJOY this lovely {and slightly healthier} dessert!

Fair Train

Friday morning I spontaneously decided to meet some friends at the State Fair {after Miss C boycotted her nap}. To add to the experience, we boarded the train and chugged 30 minutes down the track to the fair! Both kids were enamored and it was so humbling to see Mr. E's eyes light up as he watched the BIG train comin' down the track to the station!

Thursday Threads: Shut Your Pie Hole!

I am excited to share this fun glass etching tutorial! Etching is a beautiful, but subtle way to add character and personality to your glass. This is also the perfect touch to show off your holiday pies!

After making a few Strawberry Pies, Mom borrowed my pie plate. Fast forward several weeks...with my Blueberry Buckle batter mixed, I searched furiously for my pie dish. A quick call to Mom confirmed it was still MIA! Glass etching is the perfect solution to ensure it never goes missing again!

Let's DO this!

You will need a few little things:
- Glass of your choice {I used a 9 inch pie plate}
- Design of your choice
- Mylar stencil/transfer sheet {found in Quilting Notions}...you may also use contact paper
- Razor or Exacto knife
- Armour Etch etching cream
- Paintbrush
- Tape for securing your design during transfer {optional}

I started with a 5 inch x 5 inch 'A' design from the iNked God font collection. I am slightly obsessed with fonts...slightly.

Start by laying your stencil sheet over the design and secure with tape.

Then, using your knife, cut out the positive space of your design {you may also stencil the inverse by cutting out the negative space}. Be sure to bridge any floating design elements when cutting your stencil. I made sure to create a bridge over the arm of my 'A' so the stencil remained intact {see pic}. Etching can also be done by using contact paper in place of the stencil paper. Cut out your design as described above.

Creating your stencil is a tedious process. Persevere...it is worth it!

Next, position your stencil on your glass and secure well with tape. If using contact paper, remove backing and stick to your glass surface.

Now for the fun part! Using your paintbrush, apply a generous amount of etching cream to your open stencil design. To keep your lines clean, be careful not to lift the stencil as you apply the cream.

Armour Etch recommends waiting 5 minutes before removing the cream. I waited a full 15 minutes to ensure a darker etch.

Once your timer dings, carefully remove your stencil. Wipe away the excess etching cream and rinse with water.

That's it! You're done. Take a bow! Stand back and admire your unique etched glass creation!

Thursday Threads: 'Tuck Me In' Tutorial - How to Pintuck

I am sharing my tutorial for pintucking as guest posted on Vintage Gwen. Stop by and show her some love!

Pintucks are a great way to add visual interest and texture to your space. These sewn tucks can be used to add a bit more glam to bags, pillows, clothing, and linens!

Be sure to pintuck your fabric before cutting your pattern piece.

To begin, gather all of your MATERIALS:

1} Fabric cut to size. I used 100% cotton and began with a 8 inch x 45 inch strip. The final width after pleating is 2.5 inches. Be sure to allow extra fabric to pleat.

2} Ruler / fabric pencil or chalk {optional}

3} Sewing machine and matching thread

4} Iron

I am sharing two methods for pintucking. The first is very concise, but I had trouble getting my pleats even. The second method is more freehand and gives control to vary pintuck width as desired.

FIRST METHOD
Mark lines using a ruler on the right side of the fabric as a guide. Width between lines should be double the desired width of the pintuck. Here I marked 1/2" lines for a finished tuck of 1/4".

Fold fabric {with wrong sides together} matching the first two marked lines. Pin or iron.

Straight stitch along the marked line.

For the next tuck, match the third and fourth lines and pin wrong sides together. Stitch. Repeat this method until all pintucks are made. Finally, iron pleats to one side.

PINTUCKS USING FIRST METHOD

SECOND METHOD
Tucks can be sewn using your presser foot as a guide rather than marking lines on the fabric. I felt my tucks were more concise using this method.

To make your first tuck, start by folding your fabric {wrong sides together} near one edge. Stitch together using a 1/4" seam allowance.

For the following tucks, fold fabric to make 1/2" fold from your previous line of stitching. Then stitch another tuck using 1/4" seam allowance from folded edge.

Continue this method for all pintucks. Lastly, iron all tucks in one direction.

PINTUCKS USING SECOND METHOD

You can now add your pintucking to any project or pattern. The possibilities are endless! These pillow covers are available in my Etsy shop.

Finally, a good hair day! It helps that I showered today...and I have been using Bumble & bumble Surf Spray! I wanted to try this spray back in college and never got around to it. I have naturally curly hair, which is very fine {translates to flat and lifeless}. This spray gives body and defines my curl! I use a diffuser and dry my hair upside down. LOVE this product!

I learned how to sew from my MOM! She is an amazing seamstress, award winning quilter, and also creates unbelievable surface design! My sisters and I all participated in 4-H, mainly with sewing and needle crafts. Each year, we were challenged just a bit more and always judged to perfection! Every seam HAD to be straight and every crease HAD to be pressed. 4-H taught us to be meticulous while still challenging our sewing knowledge and skills. Sometimes it was a bit ridiculous, but it taught me to be accountable for the effort and quality I put into my projects. To this day, we all still joke, “Good thing this isn’t for 4-H judging”!

So, where do YOU start?

Pick a project! Pick something you WANT to do and that is a beginner level. The best way to learn is through experience! My first actual project was the elasticized skirt in first year 4-H. It was a hideous pattern and I didn’t love it, but I learned how to make an elastic waistband and how to hem!

Gather your goodies! Be sure to have the basic supplies you will need to start a project. A few include: Fabric, matching thread, seam ripper, needles, rulers, good sewing scissors, straight pins, iron/ironing board, and a sewing machine if you are machine sewing. Many patterns also require certain notions {elastic, buttons, zippers, etc}. Requirements will be listed on the outer pattern envelope.

Once you pick your project, do a few practice exercises. Get to know your machine. Yes, I said it! Do the boring dirty work of reading the user manual. You will learn SO much and be better for it. My machine does things I used to dream about…go figure I CAN do that! {Here is a good resource for learning machine basics}

Start by exploring types of stitches…straight stitch and zigzag are ones you will use the most. Straight stitch is for basic seaming, while zig zag can be decorative or used to finish raw edges so they do not ravel. {Here is a step-by-step how-to for sewing a basic seam}

Next, explore stitch length and tensions. Some machines have dials for these features and others are more computerized with buttons. Again, refer to that handy manual!

Familiarize yourself with the lingo! Get to know words you will see on patterns and tutorials. Most pattern companies will include a glossary of terms on the main page of the sewing instructions pamphlet. Words like topstitch {To sew a row of stitching close to the seam or edge of (a garment) on the outer side of the fabric} and stay stitch {a single line of stitching, through one layer of fabric, to stabilize the fabric}. Facing {a piece of material used esp to conceal the seam of a garment and prevent fraying} and hem {made by folding an edge under and stitching it down}.

Don’t forget about the internet! I still use the mighty world wide web to find the best way to sew this or that. It is also a great resource for tutorials…for the novice or expert!

Over time, you will gain knowledge of HOW TO SEW. Not just sewing projects, but you will be able to look at a garment or item and just KNOW how it was sewn together. There are endless techniques, tips, and tricks out there. If you jump right in and challenge yourself, you will soon be a pro!

It all started with my trip to Anthropologie. I found some fabulous wall hooks and knew exactly where to put them! Although it took a few weeks of internal debate, I finally got them hung in the entryway.

I was inspired by a coordinates sign I saw on signals.com and the lovely wall stenciling that has been popular in blogland lately. I whipped up this sign and found an unused frame to match.

My loving husband,

I know you're trying to figure out an anniversary present for me {and if not, take this as a huge hint}.

Jewelry is a lovely thought, but not exactly practical, given that our child might steal, break, puke on, or require us to hock anything nice to pay for medical expenses after swallowing. Candy is always appreciated, but since I've just consumed all the children's Easter sweets to save them from obesity, diabetes, and allergens, I'm not really in the mood. Instead, honey, why not pick one of these gifts I'd really love. They may take a little more effort, but they will make a big difference to me.

10. Diaper Amnesty: Actually, I'd like to avoid contact with anything sticky, stinky, or slimy, including the refrigerator door handle, the floor of my car, and whatever that congealed mass is at the bottom of the trash can.

9. Shhhhh: I need sweet absence of noise without the worry that only very bad things happen when it's so quiet.

8. The other sweet silence: It could be an extra half-hour with the bed all to myself or a lazy afternoon nap. I'll take any opportunity to lie horizontally with both eyes closed for more than 15 minutes before crying, screaming, and loud “uh oh” noises.

2. Offer to stand guard duty at the bathroom door while I take a nice, long, hot shower, free of cries through the monitor that start the second I close the shower door. The kind of shower with hot, steamy water…and soap. And time to shave without looking like the victim of a horror movie.

An Unsolicited Hug, Kiss and an "I love you, Mommy." I know...that's three things, but when delivered as a package without being asked, it's the most satisfying gift any mother can get....{ Although time alone in the bathroom is a close second}

I know we joke about the luxuries of life we sacrifice as "mom"...and it would be nice to get one or two back for a day. BUT, I am SO grateful for my helpful and loving husband and am excited to celebrate FOUR years of fabulous marriage with the man of my dreams! You are my rock and I am so blessed to spend life with you!

S'more Goodness! {with a twist}

There has been a lot of S'more ideas floating around. They all look delicious and bring me back to my younger years when we made Peanut Butter S'mores in the oven! They are THE perfect combo of peanut butter and chocolate {an all-time fav of mine}!

This snack is so easy, quick, and a great activity to involve little ones in the kitchen. Mr E loved helping stack the ingredients. Let's get started!

What you will need to make 6 s'mores:
- 6 sheets graham crackers, broken in half
- 2- 1.5 oz chocolate bars
- 6 marshmallows
- 3 Tbsp of peanut butter {give or take a little}

Turn on your oven to broil. Start by placing 6 graham cracker halves on a baking sheet. Then smear them well with your favorite peanut butter!

THE MORE, THE BETTER!

Then, top each with a marshmallow. Place pan in the heated oven for 1 minute {or less}. Watch them like a hawk...the marshmallows toast quickly under the broiler! Have your others toppings ready to stack on the warm, gooey marshmallows.

Once you remove the pan from the oven, top each with chocolate and then another graham cracker square.

GOOEY, MELTY PEANUT BUTTER!

Then, sit in a quiet, secluded place to wallow in the gooey goodness you just created!

Best Dessert EVER!

Usually I would laugh if a dessert claimed to be the best and did not contain a form of chocolate. However, this Blueberry Buckle is definitely at the TOP of my dessert list! Why? It encompasses the best of sweet baking...fruit, pie, and cake!

This amazing treat is similar to a coffee cake and fruit crisp rolled into one. It features a blueberry base, layered with cake batter, and topped with a streusel. YUM!

Enjoying Our Time Together

There are so many days when I can't remember whether I actually ate breakfast, in which room the sippy cups slipped into hiding, and how long since the last diaper change or toileting reminder. Being the MOM means always having your game face on and staying consistent, right? Kids love structure even if I feel like I am drowning.

Some days {I'll admit}, I am zoned out around the kids. Most days I am locked in and playing right alongside them. Others, I have to be mean mom and am exhausted by the constant monster mask I reluctantly wear.

This week, the kids and I visited my parents to help with some projects. Kids under the influence of travel usually equals a stressed and anxious mom nearby. During our three day trip, Mr E was on his best behavior. I am so proud he is MY son. The one who said 'please' and 'thank you,' the boy who shared with his little sis, and the little mister who said 'I love you dearly, too Mom.'

I got to snuggle, comfort, and kiss him when he spiked a fever Wednesday. It was an honor to do laundry and disinfect the bathroom floor after he threw up. I was the hero for bringing him 'red medicine' at 5:30 AM.

THIS is what it is about. This is why I am a MOM. Some days I don't feel much at all and the next I cannot contain the emotions and absolute, unconditional LOVE I have for my little ones. This love makes my brow wrinkle, the corner of my mouth to turn up into a faint grin, and my chest ache. This is what makes me a MOM.

Chocolate...The German Kind

I mentioned a German Chocolate cake {made from scratch} HERE. So, as promised here are the details!

This cake is my Mom's most favorite cake. Especially to indulge in for birthday celebrations. This year was no exception, but I wanted to kick it up a notch.

In past years, the cakes {while VERY tasty} looked something like this.

Most German Chocolate cakes {made the old-fashioned way} are not meant to have icing on the sides. It is my inference that this is why most recipes for the pecan, coconut frosting never make enough to ice the entire cake, sides included.

I recently saw a German Chocolate cake with ganache frosting on the sides that inspired me to try something new!

I used this recipe from The Nibble for the cake and pecan coconut frosting and this recipe from David Lebovitz for the chocolate frosting. The cake is VERY dense and yummy! The chocolate frosting instructions do not mention whipping the mixture once cooled. If it is not whipped, it is way to runny to decorate your cake. I beat the chocolate icing mixture for 5-10 minutes after it had cooled to room temperature. After studying this cake border how-to video, I added a shell border using chocolate frosting.

And here is the final result! Much better than past years, but still room for improvement. It was delicious!

Fashion Feature: Birthday Dinner

We celebrated my Mom's birthday this evening with dinner out and some lovely homemade German Chocolate Cake {stay tuned for recipe}! After a lot of family travel and time away, it was nice to be in familiar company.

I am starting to recover after vacation, Miss C's birthday party, July 4th get together, and a long weekend at the lake house. I am finally motivated to get the house put back together and organize. So out with the old and in with the new!

My first new find is a glass oil decanter to replace the gunky, gooey dish soap bottle kept on the kitchen sink {seen in the photo background...yuck}. I was a bit nervous trying this after reading this post from iHeart Organizing.

I found a similar decanter at Home Goods for less than $4...what a deal! The spout is fairly open and I love the clean, fresh look of the glass. After a few trial weeks, I think I am going to really love it! Yes, the flow of soap is slower than a plastic dish soap bottle. However, I find I am using less soap than before and still have plenty of suds to clean the mess! It has not become clogged or gunky and the spout stays clean. I am using Method dish soap and recommend a similar liquid soap if you try this out.

I have also been wanting to replace the rug at the garage door entrance into the house. This jute mat has been there for several years and while it held up well, over time it began to look a bit worn and dirty.

Its replacement is this lovely rug from West Elm! I love the contrast and simple design. Being a wool blend, I am sure it will hold up to daily use a bit better than the jute mat.

A Sweet 1st Birthday!

Miss C had a lovely birthday party filled with sweets, friends, family, and lots of party fun!

Most mommas know, the first birthday party is probably more exciting for the mom than the child. Mom gets to pick the theme, decorations, and plan...my specialty! I had a blast tending to all of the details.

Most of my inspiration came from the custom invitations and the dessert table runner accented with candy stripes of pale pink and yellow.

The party was hosted in our home with close family and friends attending. I still dream about having a lovely outdoor space for these soirees, but the open layout of our house works nicely.

I loved using vintage serving pieces including tableware from Rosanna, Inc . I also received a fabulous antique pink serving piece as a birthday gift from my Mom and sisters. The sweets included lemon cake with raspberry filling and vanilla smash cake from Pat-A-Cakes and Cookies Too, lemon bars, iced cookies, perfect vanilla cupcakes , chocolate dipped pretzels, filled berries, gourmet marshmallows from Oh Yum , and strawberry lemonade to quench our thirst.

I spent a lot of time designing custom labels and printables for the party. Sticker paper is my new obsession. It is so versatile and easy to use for any project! I made designs for the favors {lemon zester cookies}, buffet cards, cups, bunting, and entry sign.

I absolutely love to bake and was excited to try new ideas for the party. Chocolate dipped pretzels, new decorating techniques for the cupcakes, and an old favorite...cream filled berries!

Other details included glitter adorned lollipop cups and Sweet Water to drink. I also put together a custom subway birthday sign using an old frame. Glitter garland hung across the fireplace mantel to add a bit more glam.

Miss C sat in her new refinished throne to enjoy her smash cake! The bib was embroidered by my friend, Danielle and I loved making the party hat in coordinating fabric and trim. Her look was completed with a full tutu of course!

I think Miss C had a great time...smashing cake, opening gifts, and meeting everyone who came to celebrate!

It was humbling to see everyone mingling and enjoying good company and sweet treats. Luckily, most of the goodies were devoured! Thank you to everyone who helped to make Miss C's first birthday celebration wonderful!!

Thursday Threads: The PERFECT Cupcake!

This recipe will blow your mind...consider yourself warned!

I have been searching for an amazing cupcake recipe for years. I have FINALLY found it! I made these for Miss C's party and they got rave reviews. Many guests thought they were from a bakery. I am so proud to have finally conquered the CUPCAKE! I also finally learned how to frost cupcakes so it looks lovely rather than poopy {literally}.

So, without further ado here is the recipe that changed my life! The PERFECT VANILLA CUPCAKE from Birthday Girl!

From Birthday Girl Blog:

"Ingredients

3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 3/4 cups sugar

2 large eggs

1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

2 1/2 cups cake flour

1 1/4 cups whole milk

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

2. Bring the eggs, milk & butter to room temperature (don’t skip this step, it’s very important!)

3. In a mixing bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and pale.

4. Add in the eggs one at a time and mix until combined

5. Sift (yes, sift!) together flour, salt and baking powder together

6. Stir together vanilla and milk

7. Alternately add dry ingredients and milk to mixing bowl, scraping down after each addition. Start and end with dry ingredients

8. Fill paper-lined muffin tins with batter 2/3 full.

9. Bake at 350° for 18- 20 minute

Swiss Meringue Buttercream

Ingredients

1 lb unsalted butter, softened

2 cups sugar

8 egg whites

1 cup crème friache or sour cream

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Seeds from 2 vanilla beans

Directions

1. Combine sugar & egg whites in mixer bowl and whisk together over simmering water until hot to the touch and all of the sugar has melted and no longer grainy

2. Transfer bowl to mixer stand and whip on high until fluffy & cool – about 10 minutes

3. With the mixer on low, add the softened butter 1 tablespoon at a time until incorporated. Add in vanilla, crème fraiche or sour cream, and vanilla beans. Beat until smooth (it may look curdled, but just continue to mix & it will be fine!)."

A few notes from me:

If your Swiss Meringue Buttercream is runny {mine was}, you can save it! I refrigerated my buttercream for 60 minutes, then beat again. And beat it! It took a good 10-15 minutes for the buttercream to turn from curdled to soft and smooth. PERSEVERE and it will be lovely!!

To frost these beauties, you will need a large Wilton 1M tip and extra large coupler {got mine at Hobby Lobby}. You can use decorator bags or just a ziploc. Cut a small open hole and apply your coupler and tip. Fill your icing bag and go for it!

I used a bit different technique by piping a dollop of frosting in the center and pulling up. Then start to frost the top starting from the outside in. Make sure you keep moving while applying pressure to the bag as you go. This VIDEO from Little Birdie Secrets is great at showing this technique. Make sure you check it out before starting!

After recovering {a little} from hosting 2 parties in one day, we packed up and visited the lake house with my parents and sister. Between hubby, Mr E, and Papaw 8 fish were caught {and thrown back}! Mr E loved getting worms for hooks, catching the fish with his little pole, and then throwing the squirmy fish back in the water. So fun to watch him enjoy the outdoors!

My sweet baby girl turned 1 on June 3rd. It has been an amazing year and flew by...especially with a toddler running! Miss C is a sweet girl with such a gentle heart. She is usually quiet, but more than willing to voice her opinion when she wants. We love you C!

Thursday Threads: Antique Highchair Makeover

I am so excited to share this project with you! Miss C's first birthday party is this weekend and I wanted her to celebrate in style. I was lucky {and ecstatic} to snag this wooden highchair on Craigslist...5 minutes away and for only $10!!

I was anxious to get working on the chair for her facelift {yes, 'her'}. Structurally, the chair is very sturdy, even, and made from solid wood. I started by sanding the finish a bit and fixed her imperfections.

AFTER A QUICK SANDING

Before I talk about paint, let me introduce you to this fabulous new spray painting accessory! I got mine at Lowe's. Go now. Buy one. It will save your life...{and your fingers from spraying numbness}.

I then applied two coats of Valspar Satin Spray Paint in Churchill Hotel Vanilla. Then came the fun part...distressing! I used a fine grain sanding block to distress the finish. This block also smoothed out any rough areas...especially the seat behind Miss C's little knees. After distressing, one coat of Minwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane Clear Satin Spray was applied.

AFTER A LITTLE LOVE

I lied...the cushion was the fun part! I found this Amy Butler home dec fabric on clearance at my local quilt shop and fell in love. I also made it goo-proof by applying iron on vinyl. Miss C is quite the messy eater.

After the vinyl was applied, I sewed a small case for my foam. The foam was cut to size to fit the back of the highchair. Ribbon ties were added to the side and bottom seams to help keep it in place.

Thursday Threads - The Fabulous, The Magnificent...OXYBOIL!

Today I have the most amazing secret to share! It the strongest stain fighter I know. It's OXYBOIL!

Having kids, most laundry is stained and I am always pre-treating little tops and pants. Miss C loves to smear banana on her shirts and it is a TOUGH stain to fight. Recently, her banana stains will not budge despite trying enzyme stain treatment and Motsenbocker Lift Off {this is great for mustard though}.

Stubborn Banana Stains

Oxyboil to the rescue! In the past I have had mixed results using this method. I had nothing to lose...this was my last resort.

Here is the secret potion!

1} Boil 2 pots of water & pour them into your sink. I boiled a large pot and mixed everything in the pot. I think this method worked better since my sink never holds water well.

2} Add clothes, making sure there is enough water to cover the clothes.

3} Add 2 scoops of Oxyclean.

4} Stir with a WOODEN spoon (NOT metal, plastic would be fine too).

Keeping the clothes covered can be tricky. Here is my solution!

5} Let sit until water is cool, overnight if it is a heavy stain.

6} Wash as usual and voila! Goodbye stain!

It worked like a charm! I let it soak overnight and all stains were gone. I'm not sure HOW it works, but it does. In my experience, extreme heat sets stains...somehow, someway this potion is magic. Everything was washed through a normal cycle and this was the end result.

I am so glad Miss C has her cute clothes back to looking like NEW!

How Did the Sale Go?

How did it go, you ask?

It went great! The sale was much more successful than I anticipated. We had a great turnout, especially Friday.

Some tips I learned during the sale:

- Have FUN! Shoppers are more laid back when you are as well.

- Choose Friday for your sale. Friday was more successful than Saturday. If you are wavering, go ahead and do two days.

- Get the kids involved! Mr. E and Miss C happily played in the yard and welcomed shoppers. We also got them pumped up for the sale by organizing a lemonade stand and a cute 'Bike Fund' donation jar for Mr. E. He has been carrying the jar of coins with him ever since!

- Find a buddy. It was difficult to attend to the kiddos and help customers. This was especially hard during naps and lunchtime. Luckily a friend stopped by to help cook lunch for the little ones while I worked the sale. Thank you Jackie!

- Keep track of what you sell. It's nice to have a running tally and know what you actually sold. It was made easy using my fun printables!

- And for the record, the money belt / toolbelt worked great!!

Our fun lemonade stand featured the printable banner from TomKat Studio. The banner was strung with matching twine from The Twinery. The sign was hung from a workbench that was for sale. It caught attention of those driving by the sale and was a hit with younger shoppers!

We had a blast and made a few {hundred} dollars in the process! Stay tuned for a tutorial to create your own Bike Fund collection jar!

Thursday Threads: Successful Garage Sale! (free printable)

It is the season for sales...garage sales! I have been given a deadline to get all of my sell-able junk compiled for our neighborhood sale. Here are 10 tips for a successful sale AND some fun printables to help price your items in style!

1} First things first! ADVERTISE! Place ads in local papers, online, and throughout the community. Make sure you also use signs to direct traffic to your sale the day of. And...make sure you take them down when it's over.

2} Make your space! Make it aesthetically pleasing. Tidy up by sweeping the garage/driveway and arrange your space so shoppers can easily browse. You can also hang white sheeting using rope tied across your garage space. This will hide away items that are not for sale and make it look tidy!

3} Move your cars. Move to a nearby street or lot to allow for 4-5 cars to be parked at your house for shopping. If I cannot easily park near a garage sale, I don't stop.

4} Lure shoppers in with perks! On a hot day, providing water or having the kids sell lemonade will help shoppers browse more comfortably. Setting up a fan can also help.

5} Clear presentation. Price your items clearly. Use tags and signs or individual item stickers. Don't wait until a shopper is interested to state your price.

6} Have change! Make sure you start out your sale day with $80-$100 of small bills and coins. An early bird shopper will inevitably pay for a 25 cent item with a $20 bill!

7} Place your attention getters out in the open! Popular/larger items like furniture, grills, lawn items, and baby items should be placed in plain view for drive by shoppers.

8} Price your items appropriately. Do not price items based on emotional and personal attachments. Here is a helpful reference for pricing items.

9} Provide a man center! Lure men in with tools, screws, yard items, etc. They will happily browse while the women shop.

10} Lose the box. Instead of having a cash box, consider carrying change in a fanny pack or money belt. {I'm using Mr. E's kid sized tool belt} This makes it easy for you to mingle if necessary and be more accessible to your shoppers.

Recipe Time! Double Chocolate Banana Muffins

This recipe is delish and comes from Jackie at La Case de Sweets! The perfect thing to use my ripe bananas...plus a little {much needed} CHOCOLATE!

Here we go!

Ingredients:

2 ripe bananas
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1/2 cup yogurt
1/2 stick unsalted butter, melted
1 cup sugar
1 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
Pinch of salt
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, melted
3/4 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

YIELD: 12 muffins

Instructions:

1} Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Line muffin tins with paper cups, and set aside.

2} In a medium bowl, mash the bananas with a fork. With a wooden spoon, stir in the egg, yogurt, and melted butter.

3} In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, flour, baking soda, and salt.

4} Pour the banana mixture into the flour mixture, and mix until combined.

5} Stir in the melted chocolate chips, 1/2 cup of the mini chocolate chips, and the vanilla extract.

6} Fill the lined muffin tins with the batter. Top with the remaining mini chocolate chips.


These are a bit underfilled {makes more than 12}

7} Bake at 375 degrees for 15-20 minutes, or until the muffins are dry and cracked on top.
{I baked a bit longer than this to achieve the cracked top...make sure the base is done!}

Cool slightly before enjoying!

This is How it Happens

Each and e-v-e-r-y day, waking at 6:00 AM. It takes a toll on your body...energy and sanity.

This is how it starts.

And then it progresses with more symptoms….

Crankiness, irritability, confusion, clumsiness, and at times outbursts of crazy song and dance.

You are not motivated to leave the house because it takes too much energy and time. It’s much easier to have things delivered to your doorstep.

The delirium sets in and soon you don't remember if you showered yesterday or last week. Your hair begins to revolt! No matter how hard you try, it cannot be contained to the MOM updo.

This is how it happens.

This is how MOMS are driven to the stereotypical MOM. I am determined to break out of my funk! I WILL shower more than 3 times a week! I WILL ‘do’ my hair and makeup! I WILL wear more fashionable clothing with pants that do not feature an elastic waistband!

Remembering life before kids is my biggest motivation. Well rested and ready to conquer the world! Some days I still feel that way when I get an unprompted 'I Love You!'...and other days, I am drowning.

Here’s to all of the MOMS that will not become A MOM who let herself go!

Lake House Calm

Just a few things on my mind lately:

- Will Mr. E ever sleep in his bed again for the entire night?
- When will I wean Miss C from breastfeeding and how will she tolerate it?
- When and how do we potty train Mr. E...after vacation, but before swim class? Hmmm...
- Will any of us have the chance to relax during our family vacation?
- I need to get some landscaping done this month.
- Hurry and get everything gathered, organized, and labeled for the garage sale this weekend!

Do I sound like a crazy lady or just a normal mom?

Miss C is ONE today! This birthday is more bittersweet than the last few we have celebrated. I cannot believe how the year has really flown by and how much my little girl has learned!

Miss C...I hope you continue to share your amazing personality with us and keep us laughing. I hope as you get older you will work hard for what makes you happy. We love you more than you know.

Thursday Threads: Strawberry Pickin' on the Farm! (free printable)

Last year we took our first trip to a nearby farm when Miss C was 4 days old to pick strawberries. My Mom 'jammed' all afternoon while I busied myself with two little ones.

This year, we were all excited to pick strawberries again. Especially since our freezer jam had run dry last month! We packed the kiddos and headed to the farm with our picnic lunch.

This year we told ourselves to pick less and still came home with 18 pounds of berries! The kids conked out for naps and my Mom, sister, and I got to it. Just a warning: all of the gorgeous berries means a LOT of gorgeous pictures (compliments of my sister, Kelly)!

Mom cut berries, my sister mashed, and then my sister and tag teamed boiling the pectin and did A LOT of stirring!

Still not enough jars!

Aren't they lovely?!

When all was said and done, we made 31 jars of amazing strawberry jam!

And...two pies.

I printed my label design on sticker paper and punched them out using a 2" circle/scallop. These can also be fun as tags tied to the jar lid of your jam.

Why We Celebrate

Every year my family arranges schedules and life to meet at my parent’s lake house for Memorial Day. Usually it is an excuse to relax for three days on the water and the lake always seems to make reality disappear.

Now that I have two little ones, traveling is not so easy. Sleeping arrangements are never ideal and I am usually awake most of the night with at least one child who feels out of sorts in the new place. Saturday night sleeping at the lake house was no exception. Although at 2:00 AM I found myself thinking more about the real reason for Memorial Day and less of my personal irritation and sleep deprivation.

I immediately thought of my late Grandpa W. He served in the Navy during the Korean War. There were always grand stories to tell and pictures of his hands buried deep in pearls found during his adventure. He was the type of man who worked hard in life and was always in the mood for a Western!

Grandpa was the man who tried to snatch our nose and sang little tunes without words. He would fulfill the cliché and bounce us on his knee.

Most importantly, he would put you in your place. When I was young, he was slightly intimidating, but as I grew older I realized his zeal was meant to motivate and drive others to do their best. I chose the better private college because I knew he would be proud of that decision. In the end, he taught me to always remember the reason why I chose a certain path and that doing your best always wins.

Grandpa was a man I am glad to say was there to dance with me at my wedding. And he was ecstatic to learn we were pregnant with a (strapping) boy!

I’m sure there is so much I still have not learned about his honorable life, but the things I do remember still make me smile. May he rest in peace and the memories he left behind continue to bring joy to our hearts. He reminds me of why we celebrate life and the memory of those people who gave up their life for a greater cause.

A Little Laptop Case

My sister fell in love with this tutorial for a zippered laptop case posted from Crap I've Made. I gave it a whirl and whipped one up for her last Christmas. Since then, I have been persuaded to make a few more as gifts.

The end result is a lot of fun, but definitely tricky to get everything lined up and fit together. If you can't wait to try this one, make sure you use a home dec fabric or thicker cotton. If you decide to use a quilter's cotton, interface the main panels. I also fused the fleece to the lining for more direct padding.

I know you think it is FUN to keep him awake late and several times each night, but you will most certainly cause this momma to snap.

Please move on and bully someone else with your distractions and tears. No more night wakings, begging to sleep with Mom and Dad, and requests to sleep in random places like the hallway...please stop the excuses and procrastination. We are all tired, cranky, lost, and on the verge of insanity with sleep loss EVERY night!

I know you are only a PHASE and I hear you 'shall pass.' I hope you show dignity to leave quickly and quietly so my little man (and the rest of us) may have SWEET DREAMS again.

Simple BIG Things

There are several joys that come with being a mom or caregiver of a child. Nevermind the poopy diapers (yes, there were 5 total today), the disciplining, invoking the 'MOM' look, rinsing sippy cups, cleaning up endless food mess, cleaning up finger painting gone wrong, repeating the same sentence that begins with 'NO' or 'STOP' at least 4 times, and on...and on...

What I am loving are the simple things that in the end are the biggest highlights of my day. The phrases that E says that are so unexpected and absolutely hilarious. While shopping last week, I hear a small voice chant 'Trim the sails!' Excuse me? Yes, my 2.5 year old just summoned fellow shoppers with his true pirate spirit.

Or, pulling the backdoor curtain and reflecting on his work with 'Good as new.'

Helping mom put away laundry...how did we do? E: 'Swell!'

Not sure where he hears these amusing things, but it brings a smile to my face and often laughter to share. It is a joy to share these simple things with DH that ultimately are some of the most important things to remember at the end of the day.

TEETH! C has one of her bottom teeth just barely starting to poke through. Fingers crossed she stays sweet. We worked furiously on our one rain free day this week spreading mulch and planning landscaping. DH is worn out! Lots more to do and hopefully a few hours tomorrow before MORE rain!
